Deer Don't Eat Dragons!! By Bill Hirst, Tue Jan 10th
Ilex 'Dragon Lady' Dragon Lady Hollies are plants for zone 6b-8a. These holliesare thought of as perfect columnar hollies. These hollies canreach 20' in height and 6' in width. The leaves being smallerthan most hollies with stiff, pointed spines are not very tastyto deer. This is one of its many benificial points if yourlandscape has a high deer population in the area. This holly canbe used as a specimen or a hedge, is self fruiting with glossygreen foliage and a reddish tint on the new growth. To bad allhollies are not like this! The Dragon Lady holly will leave openspots in its growth. Hard pruning generally helps correct thisdetraction but makes full plants more costly to produce. You canexpect a 4-5' holly, being well developed within 6-7 years froma 2 gallon liner. This plant is a sharp looking plant in yourlandscape. There is no doubt that this will be a plant that youwill see more of. It holds up well for us and we have largeherds of deer at our Doylestown nursery.
Damage to seedlings by deer will increase as it has over thepast 20 years. We don't believe that there are any 100 per centeffective methods to stop deer damage except 10' high woven wirefences that are to costly for most small growers and homeowners.Human populations moving to rural areas will continue. Loss ofhuntable land will increase as will deer populations. Deerhaving multiple births coupled with increasing gun regulation islikly to continue. This means plant selection will become moreimportant.
There are few natural controls for deer populations especiallyin urban areas. Planting shrubs that repell deer is your mosteffective means to avoid deer damage. Opening your land tohunting is an effective alternative practice for lowering deerpopulations. Since deer are nocturnal, hunting may not betotally effective. On our farm we have lots of feed, our
Dangers of hydrogenated oils revealed in new downloadable report (press release) How shocked would be you be to learn that the U.S. population is being slowly poisoned by a single ingredient deliberately added to the human food supply?
At first, it sounds like nonsense. But then you realize, after learning more, that the World Health Organization tried to outlaw this ingredient... The mass poisoning of humanity: an exploration of human stupidity As human beings, we're the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves. As part of modern living, we create a wide variety of chemical toxins that go into the ecosystem through rivers and streams, the air, the soil and so on. Not only that, we actually synthesize toxic chemicals and then... Q&A: How to reduce high blood pressure and restore healthy cholesterol levels with natural health A reader asks,"What are the proven natural products that reduce high blood pressure and restore healthy cholesterol levels? I am taking steps on the nutritional side of things such as avoiding meat and dairy products while eating a lot of fruits."

plants, but little cover which is where the deer are durring huntingseasons. This means that you must have an integrated pestmanagement plan. This plan should include the following:popualtion management(hunting), repellants, selecting resistantplants, fencing, knowledge of deer habits for integrating yourmanagement plan. The Dragon Lady holly is not eatable for deer. Deer feeding will occur on fertilized and unfertilize plants. Most browsing of seedlings will occur at night. By plantingless-preferred seedlings and ornamental trees and shrubs inunprotected areas and surrounding preferred seedlings byless-preferred seedlings, deer damage is lessened. Susceptibleplants shoud be fenced or planted near occupied structures.Backyard dogs are effective in keeping deer away. Your knowledgeof deer feeding habits should be your first line of defence. Aplan based on this knowledge will provide seedlings growers withless expensive alternatives to dangerous chemiacls repellantsand hard to maintain fences and physical barriers. Deer arecreatures of habit. Deer are not going search in the woods forscarce food when it is available in quanity and quality in yourback yard. Once they find easy to browse plants in yourlandscape, they will become like giant rats invading youbackyard at night. They will return night after night and eatyou nursery stock until it is gone. Some deer in certain areaswill eat holly and white pines, while deer in other areas won't.Therefore plant preference lists are only rough guides to deerdamage susceptibility. In general browsing damage to nursery stock will be highestwhen snow or extreme weather reduces food availability.Succulent young growth is an attractive deer food source in thespring time. When food is in short supply deer will feed on lessdesireable plants. Deer eat a variety of vegetation includingwoody plants, fruits, nuts, ornamental trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, and garden vegetables. Landscaping based deer feedinghabits will reduce or eliminate costly browsing damage to yournursery stock and ornamentals. Always try and reduce deer herds. Fewer deer mean less browsingpressure. We once had a deer hunt where hunters paid 100 dollarseach to a police gun fund for the control of deer on our nurserythat is located next to Peace Valley Park. For weeks the controlworked and deer damage was controlled. Some people use soap bars. Leave the soap in its wrapper anddrill a hole thru the bar. Attach the soap bar with twine to abranch and allow it to hang 3-4' off the ground. Hang the baraway from the center of the tree. This will act as a naturalrepellant for deer. Use multiple bars for large nursery stockand trees.
