In Praise Of The Pear
By Hillary Marshak
The cultivation of pears in America has been happening as long as Americans have been around to cultivate. Though originally grown in what is now western China, the pear cultivars were brought over to America by early colonists. Since then, pears have found their way into many an American dish; both sweet and savory.

At the end of the typical harvest season, pears, just like apples, are still able to grow. For this reason, the two fruits are considered "fall fruits." Around the fall season, menus all over begin incorporating the luscious pear into desserts, soups,

and even main dishes.

So in honor of fall, let's recognize the versatility of the pear by sampling or cooking at least some of the wide variety of dishes the pear has to offer.
